Nature of Work

“The nature of work refers to the intrinsic qualities, characteristics, and fundamental elements that define a particular job or task.

Job description: The area of specialization or a list of job responsibilities

Basic duties: The basic tasks performed on the job

Non-routine tasks: Other tasks assigned to you.”

As a self employed contractor, the nature of the work of me going to Rock Creek Park from 2010 - 2018 was for artistic reasons. I have not returned back to Rock Creek Park since 2018.

Sleepy Child

I created this painting from ages 14 - 16 which was when I was a high school student. Years later, I donated the painting. The painting-- Sleepy Child was painted using acrylic paint on canvas board. Upon graduating from high school in 1993, I have not painted much portraits.

Vibrant Narratives

Vibrant Narratives. Digital art created on canvas. October 7, 2024. Afrika Abney  When I created my digital abstract painting, I thought about the colors and brush technique. Each color and brush technique applied tells its own story. Brown represents nature, while orange represents warmth, creativity and enthusiasm. On the other hand, blue represents innovation and commitment. Lastly, yellow represents optimism.

My High School Experiences

My high school experiences were diverse and somewhat traumatizing for me. I had the opportunity to exhibit my artwork in New York City in 1993 at  The New Harlem Gallery (New York City, New York) and Wisteria ArtSpace (New York City, New York). I was 16 years old at that time. Additionally, I participated in the Congressional Art Competition from 1992 - 1993.   I was exposed to a diverse set of people with different backgrounds and sexual orientations from 1991 - 1993. I was often bullied about my name, height, and size. Fortunately, I expressed my anger throughout my visual artwork. Each of these experiences allowed me to produce a different set of artwork and develop a wide range of skills.

Self - introspection

“Self-introspection, or self-reflection, can be an important part of a professional life. It can help people understand their abilities, improve their performance, and develop self-awareness.” Self-introspection, or self-reflection, can indeed be a crucial aspect of a professional life, guiding individuals on a journey of understanding their own capabilities, assessing their performance, and cultivating a heightened sense of self-awareness. Through introspection, individuals can delve deep within themselves to explore their strengths and weaknesses, identify areas for improvement, and ultimately enhance their professional skills and expertise. This process of introspection allows individuals to reflect on their actions, decisions, and experiences, gaining valuable insights that can inform their future choices and behaviors in the workplace. By taking the time to introspect, individuals can gain a greater understanding of their passions, values, and goals, aligning their professional p...

East of the Anacostia River

““East of the River” was simply a geographical description without particular significance. But, it later became how some describe the neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River — often with a negative connotation. During the 1930s and 1940s, land development of the area continued alongside increased racial diversification of the region. At the end of World War II, white flight into suburban Maryland and Virginia resulted in a majority-Black Anacostia. The Anacostia River watershed in the District of Columbia and Maryland is home to more than 800,000 people, 43 species of fish and some 200 species of birds. The watershed has been heavily urbanized over time, losing 6,500 acres of wetlands and 70% of its forest cover. Over the past four centuries the Anacostia has been given many names: the Eastern Branch of the Potomac, the other national river, the dirtiest river in the nation, the forgotten river.” I am dedicated to making a difference in the lives of individuals and famil...

The complexities of identity

“The  complexities of identity are integrating one's past, present, and future into a cohesive, unified sense of self is a complex task that begins in adolescence and continues for a lifetime. Identity in the workplace can be complex and have significant implications for workplace culture.  Here are some ways identity can impact the workplace: Intersectionality A person's identity can be a combination of overlapping identities, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, age, religion, and regional background. This can lead to a disconnect between how a person views themselves and how others view them. For example, someone may experience both privilege and oppression, or multiple forms of disadvantage. Unconscious bias Leaders bring their own worldviews, shaped by their identities, into the workplace, which can reflect their values and beliefs in the corporate culture.” The complexities of identity. Active Listening

“The best listeners convey their confidence in the other person.” Being quiet and listening fully to what the other person is saying without any judgment, bias and prejudice. Quote found on the Internet The best listeners convey their confidence in the other person by truly focusing on what is being said, rather than thinking about their own response or interjecting with their own opinions. This level of attentiveness shows respect for the speaker, validating their thoughts and feelings. It also fosters a sense of trust, as the listener demonstrates that they are fully engaged and invested in the conversation. By maintaining eye contact, nodding in agreement, and using body language that shows openness and receptivity, the listener communicates that they value the speaker's perspective. This kind of active listening allows the speaker to feel heard and understood, leading to more meaningful and productive discussions. Ultimately, conveying confidence in the other person through att...
