Kwanzaa

From 1970s - 2015, I celebrated Kwanzaa. I stopped celebrating Kwanzaa becauseI learned that the creator  of the holiday, Dr. Karenga was a rapist and criminal.  I do not advocate nor support this type of African American holiday that advocates sexual abuse towards women. I was disappointed to learn about this history on my own in 2015 as supposed to told the truth about the holiday when I was a student at NationHouse from 1978 - 1991. "For families across the country, today marks the beginning of a joyous time to reflect on the rich African-American culture and to remember the principles of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith—principles that reflect our most cherished values as Americans." —  Barack Obama "The holiday reflects the best of African thought and practice in its reaffirmation of the dignity of the human person in community and culture, the well-being of family and community,
