Spectrum Serenity

Spectrum Serenity.Digital art created on canvas. August 12, 2024. Afrika Abney “The spectrum of blue hues presents a captivating array of colors that evoke a sense of calm and tranquility. From the soft, delicate whispers of baby blue to the deep, profound richness of navy, each shade carries its own unique emotional resonance. The lighter tones often remind one of clear skies and gentle waves, while the darker shades can evoke the depth of the ocean or the vastness of twilight, creating a visual experience that is both soothing and expansive. Exploring the various tones of blue reveals a world of possibilities, each shade telling its own story. Cerulean, with its bright and cheerful disposition, can instantly uplift the spirit, reminiscent of sunny days and open horizons. In contrast, the moody allure of cobalt blue can draw one into a more introspective state, inviting contemplation and reflection. This diversity within the blue palette allows for a rich interplay of emotions, mak...

Bold Radiance

Bold Radiance. Digital art created on canvas. September 19, 2024. Afrika Abney   Good morning, I trust that you enjoyed a peaceful evening and had a restorative night's sleep. Today is Thursday, September 19, 2024, I wish you a day filled with safety and vibrant experiences that bring joy and inspiration. My journey to Brightwood, Washington, DC, began during my college years.  From 1995 - 1998, I conducted my visual arts workshops in numerous areas of the Brightwood community.   In my artistic endeavors, I chose to work with vibrant shades of yellow for my digital abstract painting, utilizing the paintapp software. This color selection was intentional, as yellow often symbolizes positivity and energy, which I aimed to convey through my artwork. The process of creating this piece allowed me to explore the interplay of light and form. PAST VISUAL ARTS WORKSHOP held in the Brightwood Community KUUMBA ARTS AND CRAFTS PROGRAM. D.C. The job market in Washington, DC in 1992

“In 1992, the job market in Washington, D.C. presented a complex landscape for African Americans, marked by both progress and persistent challenges. While the city's burgeoning government sector offered some opportunities, particularly in fields like social services and education, racial disparities remained deeply entrenched. African Americans often faced discriminatory hiring practices, limited access to higher-paying positions, and a concentration in lower-wage, service-oriented jobs. The legacy of segregation and systemic racism continued to impact employment prospects, leading to higher unemployment rates and a widening wealth gap compared to their white counterparts. However, the growing civil rights movement and increasing awareness of racial inequality fostered a climate of activism and advocacy, pushing for greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace. This period saw the rise of organizations and initiatives aimed at addressing these disparities, paving the w...

Tones of Autumn

Tones of Autumn. Digital art created on canvas. September 25, 2024. Afrika Abney There are many tones to depict Autumn. The tones of Autumn that I focused on include brown, gold ochre and orange. “The color brown is a striking embodiment of the earthy tones that characterize the autumn season. It evokes a strong connection to the natural environment, highlighting elements such as the crisp fallen leaves, the rugged bark of trees, and the rich, fertile soil that nurtures the diverse life surrounding us. This particular shade not only marks the shift from one season to another but also conveys a sense of warmth and comfort that is often associated with this time of year, inviting us to embrace the cozy atmosphere that autumn brings. Various shades of brown beautifully illustrate the essence of autumn's color palette, revealing the intricate dance of light and shadow as daylight diminishes. This spectrum of browns serves to enhance the visual experience of the season, creating a rich ...
