DC Color Narrative

DC Color Narrative. Digital art created on canvas. September 16, 2024. Afrika Abney “The color palette of black, purple, and yellow serves as the foundation for my digital abstract artwork. My academic journey culminated in graduation in 1997, during which I explored a diverse array of subjects. Despite my extensive studies, digital art was not included in my curriculum. It wasn't until 2009 that I ventured into the realm of digital artistry. The colors I have selected for my artwork are not merely aesthetic choices; they are deeply intertwined with my identity. Growing up in Washington, DC during the 1970s has profoundly influenced my artistic expression. The vibrant hues of black, purple, and yellow resonate with my experiences and memories, encapsulating the essence of my upbringing in a culturally rich and dynamic environment. My journey into digital art has allowed me to channel my personal and professional history and cultural background into a visual form. The interplay of...

Self expressions depicted through digital art

“Self-expression in the workplace can be an important aspect of diversity and inclusion. It can help create a safe space where people feel empowered and celebrated for their unique contributions. Self-expression is a key part of self-esteem and identity, and authentic expression can lead to positive outcomes. Self-expression can also have a positive impact on both the individual and the company. For example, people who feel more self-expressed at work may be more motivated and productive, which can increase business profitability. People who can express themselves well can also tap into the desire to feel valued, which can lead to higher performance.” Thus resulting in building stronger connections between employer, employee, managers and those alike. Active Listening

“The best listeners convey their confidence in the other person.” Being quiet and listening fully to what the other person is saying without any judgment, bias and prejudice. Quote found on the Internet The best listeners convey their confidence in the other person by truly focusing on what is being said, rather than thinking about their own response or interjecting with their own opinions. This level of attentiveness shows respect for the speaker, validating their thoughts and feelings. It also fosters a sense of trust, as the listener demonstrates that they are fully engaged and invested in the conversation. By maintaining eye contact, nodding in agreement, and using body language that shows openness and receptivity, the listener communicates that they value the speaker's perspective. This kind of active listening allows the speaker to feel heard and understood, leading to more meaningful and productive discussions. Ultimately, conveying confidence in the other person through att...

Why I taught the arts?

When I was a little girl, I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. I choose the arts as a vehicle and outlet for me to express myself through using the arts. If it was not for the love of the arts and I had the opportunity to teach visual arts, literary arts, and dance throughout my community in the past. It gave me the opportunity to express myself as it is related to bullying and culture, especially to minority race.  I taught various art forms such as collage design, abstract painting, drawing, poetry, and dance to children, youth and dance.
