Values

This is a collage that I created many years ago and gave away. It was one of the pieces that I featured on my old greeting cards. I created this piece while I was a student at Bell from 1991 - 1993.

Values. Greeting card created and designed by Afrika Abney

I strive to demonstrate my levels of integrity, empathy, and compassion within my community. I chose the following colors: blue, pink, yellow, black, and purple because it each of those colors have a relationship to one another and meaning. For example, I am a black, so black represents my roots, heritage, culture, and skin color. Without my ancestors and cultural beliefs, I would not be able to have values. Values are apart of who I am. Colors are embedded within me.

"Blue symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth and heaven. It is the color of the sky. And it is the color of Compassion. Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness. Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness."

"The color pink represents compassion, nurturing and love. It relates to unconditional love and understanding, and the giving and receiving of nurturing.

A combination of red and white, pink contains the need for action of red, helping it to achieve the potential for success and insight offered by white. It is the passion and power of red softened with the purity, openness and completeness of white. The deeper the pink, the more passion and energy it exhibits.

Pink is feminine and romantic, affectionate, and intimate, thoughtful and caring. It tones down the physical passion of red replacing it with a gentle loving energy."

"Yellow is associated with the intellect, logic; it has the ability to improve analytical thinking. It is also linked with cheerfulness, happiness, optimism. It inspires hope, enthusiasm. Yellow fosters positive way of thinking, as well as a thirst for knowledge. Its creativeness focuses on mental aspects, it inspires new ways of thinking and acting." It is one of the primary colors and a bright color.

"The color black represents power, individuality, simplicity, mystery and an intense spirituality." I am a black. In fact, black is one of my favorite colors. It represents who I am.

"Black isn't a primary, secondary, or tertiary color. In fact, black isn't on the color wheel because it isn't considered a color. It's all colors. Or rather, the absorption of all colors. Black absorbs all light in the color spectrum."

"The color purple is a rare occurring color in nature and as a result is often seen as having sacred meaning. Lavender, orchid, lilac, and violet flowers are considered delicate and precious.
The color purple has a variety of effects on the mind and body, including uplifting spirits, calming the mind and nerves, enhancing the sacred, creating feelings of spirituality, increasing nurturing tendencies and sensitivity, and encouraging imagination and creativity.

Purple is associated spirituality, the sacred, higher self, passion, third eye, fulfillment, and vitality. Purple helps align oneself with the whole of the universe. Different shades, tints, and hues of purple have different meanings. Light purple hues represent feminine energy and delicacy, as well as romantic and nostalgic feelings. Dark purple hues evoke feelings of gloom, sadness, and frustration. Bright purple hues suggest riches and royalty."

Blank Canvas

In my digital abstract paintings, I integrate a variety of elements such as vivid colors, intricate brushstrokes, and a diverse array of lines, shapes, and patterns. Each of these components plays a crucial role in the overall composition, contributing to the dynamic visual experience that characterizes my work. However, prior to embarking on the creation of each piece, I take a moment to closely analyze the textured blank canvas that serves as my starting point.

The Industry of Politics

Quote found on the Internet  “The political landscape of Washington, D.C. in 1985 was characterized by a complex interplay of power dynamics, policy debates, and significant events that shaped the trajectory of American governance. This period was marked by the presidency of Ronald Reagan, whose administration was focused on conservative economic policies, a strong anti-communist stance, and a commitment to reducing the size of government. The political atmosphere was charged with discussions surrounding tax cuts, deregulation, and a robust military buildup, all of which were central to Reagan's vision of revitalizing the American economy and asserting its influence on the global stage. Moreover, the social movements of the 1980s, including those advocating for civil rights, women's rights, and environmental protection, were gaining momentum and influencing political discourse. Activism was on the rise, with grassroots organizations mobilizing citizens to engage in the polit...

Tranquil Inspiration

“In the realm of color psychology, blue-green is recognized for its ability to enhance creative processes. This vibrant yet soothing color can evoke feelings of serenity while simultaneously igniting a spark of imagination. In abstract painting, the use of solid colors as a background plays a crucial role in establishing the overall mood and tone of the artwork. These uniform hues can create a sense of depth and dimension, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of shapes and forms that emerge from the foreground. By employing solid colors, artists can evoke specific emotions or themes, guiding the audience's interpretation and engagement with the piece. The simplicity of a solid color backdrop can also serve to enhance the complexity of the abstract elements layered on top, creating a striking visual contrast that draws the eye. Ultimately, solid colors in the background contribute significantly to the narrative and aesthetic quality of abstract art, allowing for a rich ex...

Unity in Motion

“Unity in Motion emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and collaboration within the arts community, promoting a sense of togetherness. During my time at various art institutions, I encountered instances of racism and discrimination. These experiences were disheartening and highlighted the challenges faced within the visual art and dance community. Additionally, I faced issues with timely payment from several organizations, which further complicated my professional engagements. Despite my commitment to providing high-quality services, there were instances where payments were delayed or not received at all and raised concerns about the professionalism of the organizations involved. It is important to note that throughout my interactions with these companies, I did not render any services since I was last hired. The combination of discriminatory experiences, financial inconsistencies, and a lack of engagement from certain organizations highlights the importance for improve...

Soaring Colors

Soaring Colors. Digital art created on canvas. August 15, 2024. Afrika Abney Outside my window, a flock of birds gracefully soared through the sky, their wings catching the fading light of the evening. The gentle chirping of crickets filled the air, creating a soothing backdrop as I immersed myself in the vibrant world of my digital canvas. With each stroke, I focused intently on the colors and shapes emerging before me, allowing the beauty of the moment to inspire my creativity rather than dwelling on what has come before. As I gazed out my window, I was captivated by the sight of birds gliding effortlessly above. The rhythmic sounds of crickets serenaded me, providing a tranquil soundtrack to my artistic endeavor. With a palette of vivid hues at my fingertips, I poured my energy into the canvas, channeling the essence of the present evening and not focusing on the past. As I applied layers of color to my digital canvas, I found myself fully absorbed in the here and now, crafting a v...
