The complexities of identity

“The  complexities of identity are integrating one's past, present, and future into a cohesive, unified sense of self is a complex task that begins in adolescence and continues for a lifetime.

Identity in the workplace can be complex and have significant implications for workplace culture.

Here are some ways identity can impact the workplace:

Intersectionality

A person's identity can be a combination of overlapping identities, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, age, religion, and regional background. This can lead to a disconnect between how a person views themselves and how others view them. For example, someone may experience both privilege and oppression, or multiple forms of disadvantage.

Unconscious bias

Leaders bring their own worldviews, shaped by their identities, into the workplace, which can reflect their values and beliefs in the corporate culture.”

The intricate nature of identity is a multifaceted concept that finds expression through various forms of art, including digital creations on canvas. The interplay of hope, joy, prayer, peace, and solitude is woven into a vibrant tapestry of creativity, culture, and tradition.

This artistic endeavor not only showcases the richness of African heritage but also highlights the significance of storytelling and self-expression through the medium of clothing, particularly African attire, which serves as a powerful vehicle for conveying personal and communal narratives.

The integration of African attire into the fabric of American society transcends mere fashion; it represents a profound assertion of identity and a sense of belonging. This fusion of styles encourages individuals to honor their roots while simultaneously engaging with contemporary social and political dialogues. The garments worn become more than just clothing; they transform into symbols of resilience and creativity, allowing individuals to articulate their unique stories and experiences. This dynamic exchange fosters a broader conversation about culture and community, emphasizing the importance of understanding and embracing diverse identities.

Throughout my journey, I have come to appreciate the transformative power of creativity in bridging cultural divides and promoting mutual understanding. The celebration of African attire within an American context not only pays homage to the rich histories and traditions of African cultures but also invites a deeper exploration of the complexities surrounding identity. Through this artistic lens, I find comfort in the shared human experience, where elements of hope, joy, and peace converge, ultimately fostering a sense of unity that transcends individual differences.

DC Color Narrative

DC Color Narrative. Digital art created on canvas. September 16, 2024. Afrika Abney “The color palette of black, purple, and yellow serves as the foundation for my digital abstract artwork. My academic journey culminated in graduation in 1997, during which I explored a diverse array of subjects. Despite my extensive studies, digital art was not included in my curriculum. It wasn't until 2009 that I ventured into the realm of digital artistry. The colors I have selected for my artwork are not merely aesthetic choices; they are deeply intertwined with my identity. Growing up in Washington, DC during the 1970s has profoundly influenced my artistic expression. The vibrant hues of black, purple, and yellow resonate with my experiences and memories, encapsulating the essence of my upbringing in a culturally rich and dynamic environment. My journey into digital art has allowed me to channel my personal and professional history and cultural background into a visual form. The interplay of...
